Overturning a ruling by Chief Rabbinate, High Court says woman who cheated on husband still entitled to 50% of assets: Infidelity during marriage does not constitute a "special circumstance&q uot; that would serve as good cause to deviate from an equitable division of assets following a divorce, the Israel High Court ruled. It overturned a ruling by the Chief Rabbinate. The controversial ruling pertained to a case of a couple that wed in 1985. The husband filed for divorce 18 years later with the Beersheba District Rabbinical Court. He claimed that his wife had cheated on him and, as such, he should not be compelled to provide her with 50% of the financial assets acquired during the marriage. The court claimed that "just as infidelity does not result in the woman losing the property with which she entered the marriage, or the money she earned during the marriage, she cannot lose joint financial assets accrued during the marriage, even if her actions are the cause of its termination.&q uot;

A Brooklyn man was arraigned Monday in the U.S. Federal Court for the Eastern District of New York on five charges related to sexual abuse of a minor. Israel Weingarten of Brooklyn was charged with two counts of transporting a minor internationall y for the purpose of sexual abuse, and three charges of traveling internationall y for the purpose of sexually abusing a minor. The victim of this abuse was Weingarten?s daughter, who he sexually abused in various ways from the age of nine to 18, according to court documents.

• Meir Kahane - [Many likened Natan-Zada to Goldstein, claiming they were both gentle men before carrying out acts of violence driven by despair at the government's direction.: Rabbi Meir David Kahane known by the pseudonyms Michael King and David Sinai, 1 August 1932 ? 5 November 1990) was an American-Israe li Orthodox rabbi and a former member of the Israeli Knesset. Kahane was known in the United States and Israel for his strong political, nationalist views, exemplified in his promotion of a Greater Israel based on Jewish law. He founded two controversial movements: the Jewish Defense League (JDL) in the USA and Kach, an Israeli political party. In 1984, Kach gained one seat in the Knesset and Rabbi Meir Kahane became a member. In 1986, Kach was declared a racist party by the Israeli government and banned from the Knesset, and, in 1994, following the Cave of the Patriarchs massacre by Baruch Goldstein the movement was outlawed completely. Kahane's Knesset career was ended by section 7a of Basic Law: The Knesset : "Preventi on of Participation of Candidates List." Kahane was assassinated in 1990, after concluding a speech in a New York hotel.

• Ashkenazi haredim lose majority in Chief Rabbinate membership vote | Jewish News | Jerusalem Post: The leaders of Ashkenazi haredim suffered a blow to their hegemony in the Chief Rabbinate while Shas and the national religious camp scored significant victories. In a vote for 10 new members of the Chief Rabbinate' ;s Rabbinical Council, a large number of religious Zionist and Shas-backed rabbis were voted in. Rabbis Ya'acov Shapira, head of Jerusalem' ;s Zionist flagship Mercaz Harav Yeshiva, was chosen along with Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu, chief rabbi of Safed. Both Eliyahu and Shapira are sons of former chief rabbis and both are considered national religious. Religious Zionist rabbis who did not make it include Shoham Chief Rabbi David Stav, who is also spokesman for the Hesder Yeshivot and a senior member of Tzohar Rabbis, and Kiryat Shmona Chief Rabbi Tzfania Drori.
