- ANALYSIS / Loud-mouthed rabbi reflects IDF's religious bent.: Most IDF generals act like they have taken vows of silence. And then there's the army's chief rabbi, Brig. Ronski, the last big mouth at IDF headquarters. Ronski is increasingly perceived as someone who causes himself trouble, particularly on matters that other senior officers have been ordered to avoid by Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi. Over the past two years, the public has heard Ronski's views on a range of subjects, including some on the fine line between army and religion, or army and politics For example, the army rabbinate gave soldiers serving in Gaza a booklet that stated not a millimeter of the Land of Israel could be given up. He says this happened without his knowledge The army also has let the right-wing organization Elad preach to soldiers about the Judaization of Jerusalem. Ronski has said religious soldiers are better fighters than their secular colleagues. This as settlers and right-wing rabbis are becoming more involved with the army rabbinate.
- Women ought not to serve in the IDF, IDF Chief Rabbi Avichai Ronski said at a conference two weeks ago. The conference was attended by several dozen religious women soldiers, and the topic was supposed to be the special problems they face.: Most religious women opt to do civilian national service instead of army service. But Ronski told the women, "I personally think that a priori, women should not serve in the army," adding that no rabbinic rulings authorize women to do so. He has since denied making the comment. Most Orthodox rabbis would agree with Ronski. But most of the others have been careful not to say so while in uniform. And some of those present, including some Orthodox rabbis and educators, were furious at Ronski's statement. "I'm not surprised that this is his opinion," said one woman. "But that he chose to say it in front of dozens of religious women soldiers, who have done something that is not easy for them - that is insensitivity. " Several women said they found his remarks particularly outrageous because he met his own wife while she was serving as a company clerk in his army unit.

- Court: UK Jewish school admissions policy is racist. The British High Court of Appeal ruled on Thursday against the admissions policy of a Jewish school, saying it "discriminated unlawfully" by using the faith of the mother as an admissions criteria.: The Court of Appeal said that it was illegal for the Jewish Free School (JFS) to admit pupils on the basis of whether their mother was Jewish or not. Lords Justice Sedley, Rimer and Lady Justice Smith concluded: "The requirement that if a pupil is to qualify for admission his mother must be Jewish, whether by descent or conversion, is a test of ethnicity which contravenes the Race Relations Act [of] 1976." The ruling follows an appeal brought on behalf of a 12-year-old boy, who was refused admission to JFS in 2007 as his mother had converted to Judaism through the Progressive Judaism movement, which is not recognized by the school. Last summer a High Court judge ruled that the school's policy was based on religious and not racial grounds and thus was lawful. Overturning this judgement, the Court of Appeal ruled that an admissions policy, based on the faith of a child's mother, amounted to discrimination .

- Ultra-Orthodox Rabbis Are Reversing Conversions By the Fistful Go out wearing pants, and you might find your Judaism (and your marriage) revoked: IN JUNE 2006, ultra-Orthodox Rabbi Leib Tropper nullified a conversion over a year after supervising it himself. He decided that the convert, whom we will call ?Sarah,? had become a Jew under ?false Pretext .? Rabbi Tropper informed Sarah?s husband, ?Avraham,? that his wife?s conversion had been registered as nullified with the Chief Rabbinate of Israel, and that the child produced by their marriage would not be regarded as Jewish, either. Rabbi Tropper declared that it was ?forbidden? for Avraham to be married to Sarah. ?Even if she decides to become observant,? Rabbi Tropper wrote via email, ?she will need a new conversion,? and the couple would require a ?new halachic marriage.?
- Rabbinical judge: Most immigrants seeking conversion are misguided. A judge of the High Rabbinical Court, Rabbi Avraham Sherman, says that new immigrants who want to be accepted as Jews according to halakha are "in the vast majority gentiles who want t...: Sherman created a crisis over the issue when he wrote a ruling in April 2008 invalidating thousands of conversions approved by the state's special conversion courts. His opinions were the dominant subject at the EJF conference in Jerusalem. It was the EJF's second Jerusalem Conference on Universal Conversion Standards in Intermarriage. Most of the participants were ultra-Orthodox communal rabbis from around the world, many of whom work in outreach programs. For three days the state's conversion programs were attacked by rabbis, including civil servants here - religious court judges (dayanim) and chief municipal rabbis - and by the visiting participants. He spoke at the conference at length on the ultra-Orthodox view on hundreds of thousands of Israelis who are not considered Jewish according to halakha He believes they should not be converted. Certainly not in the special conversion courts set up under the auspices of the PM Office, by Rabbi Druckman.

- Popular Rabbi?s Comments on Treatment of Arabs Show a Different Side of Chabad: " ?The only way to fight a moral war is the Jewish way: Destroy their holy sites. Kill men, women and children (and cattle),? Friedman wrote in response to the question posed by Moment Magazine for its ?Ask the Rabbis? feature. Friedman argued that if Israel followed this wisdom, there would be ?no civilian casualties, no children in the line of fire, no false sense of righteousness, in fact, no war.? ?I don?t believe in Western morality,? he wrote. ?Living by Torah values will make us a light unto the nations who suffer defeat because of a disastrous morality of human invention.?&qu ot;
